Nicholas S. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship

A scholarship open to high school seniors and students enrolled at Mercer University.

The Nicholas S. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship

While his life was cut short, the quality of a person’s life is not measured in years. Captain Whitlock had a profound influence on the lives of everyone he met, particularly during his four years at Mercer University. Therefore, his friends and fellow alumni wish to pay tribute to the life that he led and ensure that his legacy will continue forever through the establishment of Nicholas S. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship.

Established in 1833, Mercer University is a special place where young men and women can grow as people and flourish academically.  To ensure that others may benefit from the Mercer University experience, a Memorial Scholarship has been established in honor of Nicholas S. Whitlock. This scholarship will be awarded once adequate funds are raised and will help pay for the tuition of one student each year. The scholarship will be merit-based and reward an outstanding candidate who possesses qualities that reflect the life and memory of Nicholas S. Whitlock.

The Nicholas S. Whitlock Memorial Scholarship will provide annual assistance to individuals of outstanding merit. The scholarship is open to high school seniors and also students already enrolled at Mercer University (whose status is no higher than a sophomore at application). The scholarship will provide a maximum of eight semesters of financial assistance to scholarship recipients. The award will be dispersed directly to the university at the beginning of each semester.

A successful applicant will be an individual who is active in his/her community, hardworking, and ambitious. While academic success at the high school level and standardized test scores (ACT/SAT) will be taken into consideration, this is not an academic scholarship.  Therefore, the scholarship will be available to any individual who has been admitted and is fully matriculated at Mercer University. In order to retain the scholarship, the recipient will need to maintain a 3.00 GPA and good standing with the university. The scholarship will be awarded based upon the recommendation of a selection committee that will review scholarship applications.
